For information about driving and drivers licenses abroad, please consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation website: click here.
The Consulate General of Italy in Boston does not issue drivers licenses, but follows the directives outlined in the Circular no. 107/1997 of the Ministry of Transport, which states that the diplomatic-consular authority may confirm and extend the validity of Italian drivers licenses to allow Italian citizens to renew their driver’s license upon their return in Italy.
Italian citizens residing abroad and registered in the AIRE registry of the consular district must:
- request a medical certificate that attests the psycho-physical legal requirements by contacting Dr. Ottavio Nardone, preferably by email at drnardone@comcast.net or leaving a message at (617) 227-6590; the cost of the medical certificate to be paid by the applicant;
- Once you have obtained the medical certificate, you must make an appointment with the Consulate by writing to sociale.boston@esteri.it to finalize the renewal procedure, by presenting the expired license (no more than five years) and two recent passport photos along with the medical certificate.
Upon your return in Italy, your Italian driver’s license must be renewed by the competent Central Office of the Department of Transport, Navigation and Information and Statistical Systems of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
