The new Electronic Identity Card is a multifunctional document: it certifies the holder’s identity, serves as a travel document within the European Union, includes the holder’s Italian tax identification number, and may be used to obtain a digital identity through SPID, the Public Digital Identity System, which provides access to services offered by Italian Public Administrations.
For detailed information on the use and activation of the card, the dedicated mobile application, and technical assistance, please refer to the official website:
Electronic Identity Card (CIE)
IMPORTANT: The Electronic Identity Card is not issued immediately. It is mailed directly to the applicant’s home address.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLYING FOR AN ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARD
For a CIE to be issued, the applicant must:
- be registered with AIRE and reside within the consular jurisdiction of this Consulate General;
- have their birth certificate registered in Italy, as the registration details must be included on the CIE;
- have an Italian tax identification number, or Codice Fiscale. Applicants who do not have one are invited to follow the instructions available at the following link to apply for one: Codice Fiscale;
- have updated their information in the consular records in the event of a change of address, change in civil status, or the birth of a child. In such cases, applicants must contact the appropriate offices—AIRE at anagrafe.boston@esteri.it and/or the Civil Status Office at statocivile.boston@esteri.it—before requesting an appointment for an identity card.
HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARD
To apply for an Electronic Identity Card, applicants must schedule an appointment through the Prenot@mi platform.
When booking the appointment, please enter the personal information of the person for whom the document is being requested, if that person is different from the registered user making the appointment.
Married women are advised to enter their maiden-name personal details, as they appear on their birth certificate.
DOCUMENTS TO BRING TO THE APPOINTMENT
Applicants must bring the following:
- one passport-style photograph that complies with ICAO standards;
- a valid identity document;
- their previous identity card, if applicable. Please note that the previous card will be cancelled on the day of the appointment;
- payment of the consular fee by money order or cashier’s check, made payable to “Consolato Generale d’Italia Boston,” in the amount of $25.70.
PLEASE NOTE: If the applicant is under 18 years of age, the following additional requirements apply:
- the minor must be accompanied by at least one parent or by their legal guardian;
- in addition to the documentation listed above, the attending parent must bring the Consent Form signed by the parent who will not be present at the appointment.
DELIVERY OF THE ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARD
The CIE is not issued on the day of the appointment. It will instead be sent from Italy by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato directly to the applicant’s residential address.
If delivery is unsuccessful because the address is incorrect or because the parcel is not collected within the required holding period at the post office, the package will be returned to the Consulate for further delivery attempts.
