In the case of repatriation, the citizen will have to go in person to the Italian municipality where he or she establishes his or her new residence in order to carry out the cancellation from AIRE and registration in the APR (Anagrafe della Popolazione Residente in Italia). Subsequently, the Municipality in Italy will confirm the cancellation from AIRE directly to the Consulate General in Boston.
PLEASE NOTE: The Consulate does NOT issue repatriation certificates as they are replaced by self-certifications.
Italian citizens registered with AIRE who return permanently to Italy after residing abroad for at least 12 months are entitled to customs exemption for the importation of household goods and personal effects: self-certification form.
