The registration of such events falls under the responsibility of the Vital Records Office, whose functions in Italy are carried out by Municipalities and abroad by Consular Offices.<\/p>\n<p>The Vital Records Office of the Consulate General of Italy in Boston handles exclusively requests for the registration (transcription) of civil status documents <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">submitted by Italian citizens registered with AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad) under the jurisdiction of this Consulate<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The Vital Records Office of a diplomatic or consular mission is responsible for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>maintaining civil status registers (citizenship, birth, marriage, and death) for documents issued by the Consulate itself;<\/li>\n<li>receiving documents issued by foreign authorities and forwarding them to the Italian municipalities for registration;<\/li>\n<li>receiving judgments and legal measures issued abroad (e.g., divorce, adoption, etc.) and forwarding them to the competent Italian authorities;<\/li>\n<li>forwarding applications for changes of first name or surname to the competent Prefectures;<\/li>\n<li>preparing the official record of marriage banns and posting them online on the Consular Notice Board;<\/li>\n<li>performing consular marriages, provided that local laws do not prohibit them. A consular marriage may be refused when the parties do not reside within the consular jurisdiction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Italian citizens are required to report all changes in civil status (by submitting the relevant documents or other supporting documentation) that occur during their stay abroad to the Consular Office responsible for the place where the event occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Documents issued by countries that have acceded to the Vienna Convention of September 8, 1976, which provides for the issuance of a multilingual form, are exempt from legalization and translation requirements.
