The Ambassador of Italy to the USA, Armando Varricchio, visits New York (13-14 July 2020)

Washington, July 14 2020. Armando Varricchio, Ambassador of Italy to the USA, visited New York, the city symbolizing the United States during the height of the pandemic and at the center of the gradual economic recovery in America.

“After the lockdowns, I wanted to resume my regular visits around the US starting from New York City to show first of all the great solidarity of Italy with our American friends,” said the Ambassador. “I want to give a further concrete sign of the support of our institutions to all the Italians here in New York working to consolidate bilateral relations in all sectors, from the economy to trade, from science to medicine to culture,” said the Ambassador. “Like Italy, New York has not bowed to the virus – he added. The city reacted firmly and resiliently even during the darkest moments of the pandemic, responding to the emergency and always eyeing the future.”

During his visit, the Ambassador met the representatives of the Italian institutions in NY (ICE, IIC, Bank of Italy and Italian-American Chamber of Commerce) at the Consulate General and inaugurated the new Passport section in the presence of the Consul General Francesco Genuardi and the President of the Comites of the Tristate area, Paolo Ribaudo. The new structure responds to high safety requirements and will allow to continue to deliver services efficiently to the community, while ensuring greater protection of the health of visitors and Consulate officials.

The Ambassador then participated in the reopening of the Rizzoli Library headquarters after the damage suffered during the recent protests, visited Eataly’s HQ and attended a presentation event of the Italian startup Helbiz, specialized in micro-mobility, founded in 2016, and operating in both Europe and the USA.

On July 14, Ambassador Varricchio opened the Webinar “Practical Guide for innovative Start-ups who wish to enter the US market” organized by the ICE offices in New York. The Ambassador stressed “how the pandemic has accelerated a process of rapid technological transition and how the birth of a new entrepreneurship, the creation of innovation and new start-ups are fundamental factors to drive the recovery.” Varricchio also highlighted how “our start-ups, the support provided by the Italian government and the great openness of the American market to Italian innovation and creativity provide — even in this complex phase — a unique opportunity for an expansion in the USA. “

During the visit, the Ambassador also met David Reich, President of the Mount Sinai Hospital Group, an institution on the front line in dealing with the emergency in NY and where many Italians work in prominent positions.
