Vital records collects certificates of certain aspects in the life of a citizen: birth, marriage, death, divorce, citizenship. The registration of these certificates is the responsibility of the municipalities in Italy or of the Consular offices abroad.

U.S.-issued vital certificates that are to be recorded in Italy must be in long form and bear the date the certificate was filed with the appropriate office in the U.S.
